Hunting the edges of a real refuge

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge and Lake Lowell hold some of the highest waterfowl concentrations in the Treasure Valley through fall migration — which means the private ag fields around the refuge boundary get worked hard by birds moving on and off the sanctuary.

We hunt private ground adjacent to the refuge, not refuge sanctuary land itself, timed around bird movement between the protected water and the surrounding fields. Refuge land has its own rules, including limits on where goose hunting is allowed, and we follow them.

What to know

  • Refuge-adjacent private fields
  • Private ground only, not refuge land
  • Best mid-to-late season as birds stack up
