Questions
Frequently Asked
Do I need my own hunting license and stamps?
Yes. Every hunter must hold a valid Idaho hunting license, Idaho HIP (Harvest Information Program) registration, and a Federal Duck Stamp where required. We can point you to where to get each, but purchasing them is on you before the hunt.
Do you provide shotgun shells / ammunition?
Bring your own non-toxic (steel or approved alternative) shot — it's federally required for waterfowl and we don't stock ammunition. Let us know in advance if you need help sourcing some locally.
What if we don't see many birds that day?
We scout ahead of every hunt and hunt the best water or field we've got that week, but migration timing, weather, and bird behavior are outside anyone's control. We don't guarantee a harvest — we guarantee a real, well-run hunt on water we've actually scouted.
Can I bring my own retriever?
With advance approval, yes. Let us know when booking — we need to know ahead of time, and your dog needs to be steady and under control in a blind with other hunters and dogs.
Are youth hunters allowed?
Yes, subject to Idaho's youth hunting age and supervision requirements. Hunters 14 and under hunt for half price. A parent or guardian must sign the liability waiver for any hunter under 18.
Do you offer discounts for veterans or youth?
Yes. Veterans and hunters 14 and under get 1/2 off every hunt: $150 for a duck hunt, $175 for a goose hunt, and $250 for a combo hunt. Mention it when you book.
What is the Veteran Weekend hunt?
Each season we offer one free guided hunt to a veteran who applies on our website during Veteran Weekend in the state of Idaho. Apply through our booking page.
Do you offer corporate or large-group hunts?
Yes. For groups of 7 or more, special pricing is available. Visit our corporate hunts page or call (208) 328-5090.
What's your weather and cancellation policy?
We hunt rain, snow, wind, and cold, so ordinary weather doesn't cancel a hunt. If your guide calls it off because conditions are truly unsafe (lightning or dangerous ice or water), you can reschedule free or get a full refund. If you need to cancel, a 50% deposit holds your date and the refund terms depend on how much notice you give. Full details are in our Booking & Cancellation Policy.
How much is the deposit?
50% of your hunt price, plus the Idaho sales tax on that half (so half of your total), holds your date, and the balance is due the morning of your hunt. See the Booking & Cancellation Policy for details.
Is sales tax added to the price?
Yes. Idaho sales tax is added on top of the hunt price, and your deposit and balance include it. The tax applies to the guided hunt only, not to food, gear or lodging.
Do I need hunting experience?
No — we've guided everyone from first-timers to experienced waterfowlers. Just come with your firearm safety fundamentals down; the guide handles the rest, including a safety briefing before every hunt.
What's included in the price?
Guiding, the decoy spread, blinds, calling, and bird cleaning after the hunt. Not included: your license/stamps, ammunition, food, and gratuity. See the Hunts page for current pricing.
How does booking work?
Send a hunt request on our booking page. You'll get a confirmation email right away, and someone from our team will call or text to lock in your date, party size, and hunt type.
Where do you hunt?
We hunt private and public waterfowl ground across the Treasure Valley, including the Deer Flat / Lake Lowell area, C.J. Strike Reservoir, and the Snake River bottoms. Your exact spot depends on the week's birds, water, and weather, and your guide confirms it with you before the hunt. See our Hunts page for the areas.
Do I have to sign a waiver?
Yes. Every hunter signs a liability waiver before the hunt, and a parent or guardian signs for any hunter under 18. We send you a personal link to sign it online in a couple of minutes. You can also see it at ironfeatheroutfitters.com/waiver.html.
What should I wear and bring?
Dress in layers, bring waterproof boots, and wear camouflage that matches the habitat. See our What to Bring page for the full list.
Can I bring friends who aren't hunting?
Ask us when you book. Space in a blind is limited and safety comes first, so we decide case by case. Anyone who comes along signs the waiver too.
